Retire, Rewire, ReFire

On one side was safety and routine, on the other side was uncertainty and adventure.

From The Art of Non-Conformity
Inside there was always a golden ticket.

Retire

On May 1, 2024, I’ll be retiring from my programming job of 25 years with UCHealth. Including other prior jobs, that will be approximately 30 years of sitting in front of a computer screen. Holy sweet awesomeness am I ever excited to start a new adventure!

Rewire

With all those years doing the same type of work, I thought it would be a great idea to start off by accomplishing a goal I had long ago planned. In 1993 while still in college, I decided I was going to bike across the USA after graduating in 1995. Graduation came with the reality of how much college debt I had accrued, and I regrettably decided to let that dream go and follow the rest of the pack out into the workforce.

June 2024, I will be reawakening my dream and making it come true!

ReFire

Starting anew. Fresh.

This year I’ll be purchasing a cargo van and building it out to a camper van. When I retire next year I’ll be selling the house, bike across the USA, and then start living the nomadic van life.

I have so much more to say on each one of these topics, but that will be for future posts. It’s such an overwhelming great change that I’m taking it all in small chunks as I learn as I go. I’m excited to share it with all of you and hope you’ll ride shotgun with me.

Peace,

Dwight 🦋

  2. This scenario reminds me of Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken”…“yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back.” But you are doing the dream, Dwight, and it’s that journey that fulfills us! Congrats on the upcoming retirement!

  3. This is SO EXCITING!!! You probably don’t know, because I usually only blog about my alcohol struggles, but one of my life obsessions is retiring early / being financially free. I hated sitting in front of a screen all day from the minute I got out of college. One life settles down maybe I’ll start a real non- anonymous blog to post about all that 🙂

    1. Thanks so much for the encouragement! I’m a strong follower of Dave Ramsey where you have to live like no others and don’t get caught up buying things. It took me a long time to get there. You’re so smart to be thinking this way and believe me it will serve you well down the road. Actually, it allows you to choose your own damn road!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN💪❤️🤗
