Pick up food.
Insert food into mouth.
Chew food.
While chewing, identify all the tastes that are coming through.
Swallow.
Did you drift off on the last four bites?
Am I still hungry?
If yes, repeat. If no, stop.
If you’re envisioning The Terminator going through his decision tree, that’s about right.
Right now, this is where I’m at. It’s not natural and very awkward, but that’s okay. I’m learning to ride this new bike. It’s not easy after years of riding a whole other way.
I live alone. I’m sitting at my table with no “entertainment” in front of me, including reading or music. It’s really, really quiet. Just try that a few times; it seems weird, doesn’t it? It’s actually getting more calming as I practice it.
This is the part called “Putting in the Work.” In order to advance my wellness, I must put in the work. No magic pills or free offers, just work, work, work. I’m learning new habits, and one day, I know they will become natural and not so robotic.
For today though, I’M KILROY!
Mindful Eating Day 6
Peace,
Dwight
