Ten Principles of Intuitive Eating

* Headings from the book Intuitive Eating: A revolutionary anti-diet approach.

Reject the Diet Mentality

I have already discussed this in a prior blog. You don’t have to diet; you can make peace with food.

Honor Your Hunger

When your body—not your mind—tells you it’s hungry, eat. You don’t have to fast or eat a certain number of times a day. Just listen to your body.

Make Peace with Food

No more “I shouldn’t” or “I couldn’t” eat this. You can enjoy your favorite foods without regret.

Challenge the Food Police

Don’t let that little voice in your mind tell you that you’re bad for eating something, only to flip and praise you for eating something else. Challenge these thoughts.

Discover the Satisfaction Factor

“When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content.” – Intuitive Eating book

Feel Your Fullness

As you eat, take your time and be mindful. Pause and ask yourself, “Am I still hungry?” throughout your meal. Your body will guide you.

Cope with Your Emotions with Kindness

For me, many of my emotions led to overeating. Afterward, the emotion often turned to regret. The key is to do the work to understand and address your emotions. Acknowledge them with kindness.

Respect Your Body

We all have different body types. Give your body the dignity it deserves. Respect your form and give it love.

Movement – Feel the Difference

Move your body in whatever way feels good to you—dance, walk, hike—and feel your body become energized. This is significant.

Honor Your Health – Gentle Nutrition

Eventually, you’ll seek out healthy, tasty food items. Honoring your body will naturally lead to this.
