The Calmness of Disruption

I’m Awake!

For the last seven weeks, I’ve woken up, used the bathroom, and turned my shower to the coldest setting.

The mental and physical struggle beforehand is beyond real.

I have to not think. Count down from five. Step in.

There’s no easing into it.

I rapidly blow out air as I get under the water. After a few seconds, I’m back to breathing semi-normal.

I soap up quick. Rinse, rinse, rinse.

My mind is forced into reset mode. It’s unable to think about all my “shit” when my body is trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

And bam—I shut off the water.

Tops a minute and a half.

I refer to it as my morning rinse.

As I frantically towel off, I’m overcome with waves of calm.

Mind and body become one.

I glance at the mirror, and in that instant, I’m Awake.

It’s a feeling that can only be experienced.

I write this not to impress, but to challenge you to rub up against your edge and fling yourself forward regardless.

The comfort is the prison we can’t see.

Disruption is the key to escape.

Once briefly opened, the pull forward begins.

  1. I gave this a shot this morning and it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, but it probably was the quickest shower I have ever taken. Water companies should encourage cold showers as a way to conserve water. Jokes aside, it was invigorating and very grounding.

Joe Dispenza has some thoughts on comfort:”Comfort is a cage. And most people decorate their cage so beautifully that they forget it’s a prison. They fill it with entertainment, distractions, and routines that make life tolerable, but never extraordinary.”

  2. Wow Dwight. Just wow…first great detail so I felt the experience as you described – YIKES SO COLD! And then these words are now haunting me…’the comfort is the prison we can’t see’ and now my mind’s off in a whole new direction which I needed…thank you my friend.
