I’m not dieting

From what I’ve read so far on mindful eating, it doesn’t involve dieting. Like everyone, I’ve had my share of diets, lost the weight, and gained it right back. I lost 20 pounds with Weight Watchers and 26 pounds through another group. Each time, it restricted the foods I could eat in some manner, which equals a diet. Along with that, there was much negativity, guilt, and shame for falling off the path. As my history can vouch, they just end up being unsustainable. Sooner or later, cruise control kicks in, and one off-the-list food item ends up crashing the forward momentum.

This time, I’m eating without counting points and including carbs, dairy, sweets, and just being mindful to eat only when I’m hungry and to stop when I’m full. I’m sure as I go along, I’ll start “choosing” more foods that will improve my energy and not cause my body any harm. Slowing down and being more conscious can only lead me in that direction. But if it’s a birthday, I’ll have cake. If it’s pizza night, I’ll have pizza. If I use my mindful eating tools, there won’t be any guilt involved.

Day 4 and I’m heading toward a healthy, sustainable relationship with food that’s free of guilt and full of wellness.

  2. I counted calories for a month last fall and that worked for me – but it may have worked because I was being very mindful of what and when I was eating. I haven’t regained the weight I lost this way so big win. I have had a number of friends join Weight Watchers and similar groups. The only thing they had in common was that nobody lost any weight. Those programs may have changed in recent years to reflect new ideas on weight loss.
