First ride of the year

Mountain biking in Catamount

Can you believe my first mountain bike ride of the year didn’t happen until November 10, 2025? I think my indoor NordicTrack bike has spoiled me. Maybe, just a bit? It’s got everything—incline control, speed adjustment, a massive screen with virtual rides around the world, and even a built-in fan for when things heat up. But this Monday, I finally decided it was time to get back to reality.

Luckily, Catamount Reservoir is just ten minutes from home. No excuses left.

The trail isn’t overly technical, but it’s certainly no “pack up the kids and bikes” kind of ride either”. At 9,700 feet, the elevation alone makes sure you feel every pedal stroke. I couldn’t help but wonder how my legs—and lungs—would hold up after months confined to an indoor trainer.

Well, let me tell you—I think I burst a lung and probably terrified any nearby hikers with my freight-train breathing. Sweet mother, this was definitely hostile territory!

Overall, I did a pretty decent job. I made it through the loop I’d set as my goal, and I was definitely proud of that.

Nothing compares to the real thing: the crisp fall air in your lungs, the scent of pine and dirt, your core kicking in to keep you balanced over rocks and around tight turns. No machine can replicate that.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m not giving up the convenience of my NordicTrack. But after today, I’m definitely reminded that a little reality mixed with some discomfort go a long way for me!
